چکیده

Time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy was used to obtain new information about the dynamics of electronic relaxation in gas-phase indole and 5-hydroxyindole following UV excitation with femtosecond laser pulses centred at 249 nm and 273 nm. Our analysis of the data was supported by ab initio calculations at the coupled cluster and complete-active-space self-consistent-field levels. The optically bright (1)L(a) and (1)L(b) electronic states of (1)ππ∗ character and spectroscopically dark and dissociative (1)πσ∗ states were all found to play a role in the overall relaxation process. In both molecules we conclude that the initially excited (1)L(a) state decays non-adiabatically on a sub 100 fs timescale via two competing pathways, populating either the subsequently long-lived (1)L(b) state or the (1)πσ∗ state localised along the N-H coordinate, which exhibits a lifetime on the order of 1 ps. In the case of 5-hydroxyindole, we conclude that the (1)πσ∗ state localised along the O-H coordinate plays little or no role in the relaxation dynamics at the two excitation wavelengths studied.

Excited-state dynamics of guanosine in aqueous solution revealed by time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy: experiment and theory.

Time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy is performed on aqueous guanosine solution to study its excited-state relaxation dynamics. Experimental results are complemented by surface hopping dynamic simulations and evaluation of the excited-state ionization energy by Koopmans' theorem. Two alternative models for the relaxation dynamics are discussed. The experimentally observed excited-state life...

Electronic structure dynamics in a low bandgap polymer studied by time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy.

Means to measure the temporal evolution following a photo-excitation in conjugated polymers are a key for the understanding and optimization of their function in applications such as organic solar cells. In this paper we study the electronic structure dynamics by direct pump-probe measurements of the excited electrons in such materials. Specifically, we carried out a time-resolved photoelectron...

Observation of ultrafast NH3 (Ã) state relaxation dynamics using a combination of time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and photoproduct detection.

The ultrafast excited state relaxation of ammonia is investigated by resonantly exciting specific vibrational modes of the electronically excited NH(3) (Ã) state using three complementary femtosecond (fs) pump-probe techniques: time-resolved photoelectron, ion-yield and photofragment translational spectroscopy. Ammonia can be seen as a prototypical system for studying non-adiabatic dynamics and...

Time-Resolved Photoelectron Spectroscopy of Dissociating 1,2-Butadiene Molecules by High Harmonic Pulses.

Using 42 nm high harmonic pulses, the dissociation dynamics of 1,2-butadiene was investigated by time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (TRPES), enabling us to observe dynamical changes of multiple molecular orbitals (MOs) with higher temporal resolution than conventional light sources. Because each lower-lying occupied MO has particular spatial electron distribution, the structural dynamics ...
